Double Page Spread

Above is my complete double page spread article which I created on InDesign, but had to first cut round the image of the model. Whilst completing this task I had the problem that I did not know at first how to make the text flow from column to column and also I was unsure how to text wrap, so I used the help CD for ID to resolve my problem.

Second Draft of Double Page Spread

Sam Avery announces as he enters the room ten minutes early. He goes directly over to the wardrobe of clothes we’d chosen for him and picks out a simple outfit of black skinny jeans, a white cartoon top and a basic grey and black jacket saying that ‘I’d rather people concentrated about what I have to say than what I’m wearing; like the good old saying don’t judge a book by it’s cover right?’ he laughs. After taking a great deal of pictures and looking at them on the computer he announces ‘they look empty, I think they’d look better with my bass.’ He rushes off down to his car and returns with a beautiful Ibanez sr500 of which he immediately amazes us with his skills. Now looking much more comfortable with his ‘curvy woman’ as he calls it he’s much happier with the results of the photographs. With all the pictures up on the screen he assertively chooses the ones he thinks he looks best in which are the ones that we have used.

He lounges back and overtakes the 3 seater sofa and starts jamming on his bass casually asking ‘So, what is it you want to know about me?’ We all sit stunned, still amazed by his skills until I ask what age did he start playing to become so talented? ‘Well, I always wanted to play an instrument from always being mesmerised by musicians and when I was 12 I finally decided it was time to learn something, but I didn’t have a clue what. I’d already found a passion for music and listened to artists such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix, Foo Fighters, Seasick Steve and loads more and so wanted to either sing, play drums, guitar, bass, keyboard or something different like the harmonica. After realising I couldn’t sing, had nowhere to put drums, not many bands wanted someone who could play harmonica and loads of people played guitar I quickly decided I was going to take up bass. Proudly I can say that my first bass was pink, which most men wouldn’t tell you’ he says with a large grin assuring us still that he is straight. ‘My parents paid for my bass lessons which I’m thankful for as I seemed to pick up on them quickly and before I knew it I was in a band with some of my mates.’

So is this still the first band or is this a following one? “Well no” he looks away uncomfortably. “The first band I was in was just me and some mates, but we got pretty popular and well known locally playing gigs weekly. I didn’t enjoy the music we were playing and wasn’t ever really that involved. But then I got lucky at one of our gigs and got offered a record deal, but with another band. I known I must sound like a right d**k but I didn’t even think twice about not taking the offer. I loved the music they were playing and the people were all great so of course I took it. It left a lot of bad feelings and we don’t talk anymore but I don’t think about that. And obviously now I’m still in Infected and loving it.

Quickly changing the subject noticing he wasn’t happy about the subject I said we’ve heard you’ve had some problems with Pete Wentz from the famous band Fall Out Boy but what is it all about? Sitting back much more comfortably he answers ‘Well, basically I just don’t think they should have got as big as they have, as yeah I’ll give it to them they make some good tunes, but they all just sound the same to me and Pete doesn’t do anything experimental just keeps it all basic and boring. I haven’t got anything against them guys personally, I mean everyone wants to get big and they were just lucky enough to get noticed.’
Inquisitively I asked if the band knew about this? ‘I don’t know, and to be honest, I don’t really care. I’m not gonna go behind their back and purposefully talk s**t about them, but if I get asked a question I’ll answer it truthfully.’ he calmly answers. Are there any other bands you don’t like or have grudges against then? “Like I said I don’t like to talk s**t, so no is what you need to hear.” he replies with a sly smile obviously revealing there are some other bands he disagrees with.

Realising I wasn’t going to find out about any other bands he doesn’t like I finally asked how the new album was to make? He seems more interested in the conversation and looks up to tell us “It was such a laugh. We wrote all the tracks together before, like I’d write down a bass line and then the rest would slowly build it up, it’s the best way to do it. In the end we spent just 2 days in the recording studio to get them all done and dusted. Some of the stuff’s a bit different but we haven’t greatly changed as we’ve seen what’s happened before when bands with lots of fans have totally changed and left them pretty f**ked off. So get out there and buy a copy man.”

Making of the Contents Page

I initially used the gradient tool which blends from black to white for the background.

I used the shape tool, to produce the different boxes, and placed the image in. To the image and boxes I added a drop shadow with a large size.

I then added another box for the main contents section. Also I added a box for the title, but made this at an angle using free transform. Under this I entered a maroon box, which is the main colour I am keep consistent through out my front cover, contents page and double page spread.

I thought that the background looked too boring and plain, so on top of the original background I customised the shape tool and placed splashes in grey and white across the page, creating a paint splodge effect. This has made the background more attractive and eye-catching.

I inserted the main contents on the left hand side separating the different sections with clear titles in a different colour. I also inserted the title 'contents' in a larger font, and using a different style.

I inserted the numbers of the different pages and used the free transform tool to put them at an angle to make them look more messy, like a magazine contents page.

I placed text in the editorial box and in the competition one also. I wrote my name in a different writing to make it look as if I had written it on myself.

On the bottom left I inserted the front cover of the magazine (with a drop shadow) and writing to show that you can subscribe to the magazine. I have put an outer glow on 'subscribe' to make it stand out.

For my final step I inserted a picture of a party scene, revealing what is included later on, and the page number of where the top 10 party places are so they can go straight to that page. Under the picture in the bottom right I have included the name of the band with an outer glow and drop shadow. I have also written his own name on the bottom of his show to make it look like they are personalised as he has the money to do it as he is a rock star.
